Insider reveals the latest regarding Jake Guentzel's future in Pittsburgh
Dubas Must Make a Decision Concerning Guentzel
In a recent article for The Athletic the famous insider Pierre LeBrun brushed the latest portrait of Jake Guentzel's situation with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
With Jake Guentzel currently playing through the final season of his five-year, $6 million AAV deal in Pittsburgh, all eyes are turned to Kyle Dubas and how he'll manage the situation.
The Penguins have a decision to make soon. With the trade deadline approaching fast, Dubas will need to decides if he trades him, extends his contract, or risks to see him walk away next summer on the free agent market.
But the bigger question, that could be the key to all this, concerns the playoffs.
LeBrun Reveals the Latest Update on Guentzel
Pierre LeBrun elaborated on the subject:
"My understanding is that there were a number of conversations before the season between Guenztel's camp and the Penguins and there was a world in which he could have been extended then. But it didn't happen, and now both sides have to make realistic decisions about what the future looks like.
Can the Penguins make the playoffs this season? Yes. Can they win a Stanley Cup? I highly doubt it. What does that mean as far as how Guentzel views his future and what Dubas sees as the best path forward?
It's quite a pickle. I don't envy the spot everyone involved is in here. But this is where Dubas will give us a glimpse of how he views this team, bigger picture. Unless the Penguins are sitting comfortably in a playoff spot, the smart move is to trade Guentzel. It's the tougher call, but it's the right one.
Like I said, though, I could easily see this one going either way."

Here, the realistic option could break the fans' hearts. If Guentzel walks away, it removes almost all the team's chances to make it to the playoffs, and one of Crosby's opportunities to win another Stanley Cup.
