It Was Revealed that the Penguins Are Holding Back any Offer to Jake Guentzel
The talk of the town in Pittsburgh and the NHL seems to be about Jake Guentzel. But it still looks like the Penguins do not have a direction yet on what to do now that the All-Star Break has come and gone.
Last week during the Penguins bye, it was speculated by Nick Kypreos of SportsNet that the Penguins put an offer on the table for Guentzel that he has yet to sign. The deal that Kypreos mentioned was worth $8.5 million a season, for 6 years.Pens Insider Reports That No Offer Was Submitted to the Guentzel Camp
New reports from Penguins Insider and The Athletics reporter Josh Yohe state that no offer was made. In fact, any serious negotiations between Kyle Dubas and Guentzel's agent Ben Hankinson have not begun.
Despite some previous reporting, the Penguins are yet to offer Jake Guentzel a new contract. #LetsGoPenshttps://t.co/w229U80bIo Inside the Penguins (@InsidePenguins) February 5, 2024
In his article, Yohe writes;
«Dubas and Guentzel's agent, Ben Hankinson, have a good relationship and have had casual conversations about Guentzel's future, a team source said. Serious negotiations, however, haven't begun."
So, for now, it looks like the Penguins are still on the path for a current bid at the Stanley Cup and playoff contention. Dubas is still waiting to see what will happen and if the Penguins look like they can be a threat, maybe they will go into buying mode.
In the coming weeks however, if the playoffs appear out of reach, then their best bet will still be to try to trade off Guentzel to the highest bidder in the hopes of a decent return.
