Maple Leafs Nylander Fires a Shot at Penguins GM Kyle Dubas
On Monday, news broke about William Nylander's new contract extension with Toronto. It is the largest contract that the Leafs have signed in their storied history. The details of the contract include 8 years at $92 million, an average of about $11.5 million a year.
Nylander and the fans in Toronto must be very happy with this deal and how quickly it emerged. Recently, Nylander was invited on the Kyper and Bourne show on Sportsnet to discuss his new deal, his new long-term home in Toronto and how he feels about it all. During the conversation, you can tell that there was some undertone about how long this deal took to form as opposed to his last one, under Dubas.
Nylander Comments on his contract extension:
"My thought process was just to keep playing the way I've been playing. I mean, I'm really happy that it was able to get done, this time so fast compared to last time"
"I told Brad (Treliving), 'This is where I want to win. We gotta do this.'"#LeafsForever star @wmnylander shares his thought process through his extension negotiations with @RealKyper & @jtbourne.

The Penguins current general manager, Kyle Dubas, was the GM referenced by Nylander. Dubas handled the contract negotiations for Nylander back in 2018. After a long and difficult summer negotiating with Dubas, Nylander sat out the beginning of the season while waiting for the deal to develop.
It took Nylander's agent, Lewis Gross with Dubas and Nylander's father Michael to come up with the previous contract of $45 million over 6 years. Nylander lost 26 games sitting out waiting for this deal to emerge.
It definitely appears that the Nylander camp negotiations with Dubas did not sit well with them. Treliving has shown a much greater urgency in getting a deal done with Nylander then Dubas had.
Clearly in Nylander's tone, he is much happier with how Treliving handled the extension this time around.
