Penguins Forward Drawing Interest from Eastern Conference Rival

The Pittsburgh Penguins landed Reilly Smith from the Vegas Golden Knights as a cap dump this past summer, and now, it appears that the veteran forward could be on the move again.

Pittsburgh to sell on Smith at the deadline?

While Smith may currently be injured, when healthy this season, he's been a solid contributor for Pittsburgh, and this may work out best for the team if they are willing to sell him at the deadline.

In 40 games this season, Smith has a solid 8 goals and 20 points, and while he won't net them a massive return, selling on the 32-year old right now would certainly be in their best interest.

Tampa Bay a potential destination for Smith?

There may be many suitors for Smith if the Penguins do decide to sell at the March 8 deadline, but now, the Tampa Bay Lightning have been listed as a potential destination for the veteran as they look for another deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Given comparable deals in recent years, it's easy to expect Smith to bring back a future first or second round draft pick along with a potential prospect, and with Nikita Kucherov/Brayden Point doing all the heavy lifting for Tampa Bay in 2023-24, this move would give them fantastic depth scoring for a relatively cheap price.

There's still five weeks to go until the deadline however, and if the Penguins can get hot, there's potential for them to be buyers, but if not, keep an eye on Smith as an asset to move on from.
