Penguins Goaltending Prospect Could Make the Jump Sooner Rather than Later

Former Top European Goaltending Prospect Joel Blomqvist

The Penguins selected Finnish Goalie Joel Blomqvist 52nd overall in 2020. He was considered to be the 3rd best international goalie available in that draft. After a few seasons in his home country, Blomqvist has seemingly found his stride in Wilkes Barre.

Pittsburgh's Goaltender Situation

Whether you like it or not, Jarry is the long term solution for a starting goalie in Pittsburgh for the forseable future. Jarry has posted very solid regular season numbers over his tenure in Pittsburgh but has faced criticism from the Penguins faithful due to his inconsistency in the playoffs.

Alex Nedjelkovic has looked like a great backup or a second starter this year, as him and Jarry have been sharing the net as of late. However, he came in on a 1 year deal this off-season and their will likely be teams interested in his services during free agency. If he was to leave, it looks like Blomqvist could be a very suitable replacement.

The young Finn has been rock solid this year for the baby Pens and may be ready to make the jump to the NHL. He has posted a .922 SV% and a 2.12 GAA over 24 starts in the AHL. If he is to continue this excellence, the next logical step is a promotion.
