Report: Penguins Are Willing to Deal Guentzel
The All-Star break is here, and one of the biggest deals before the trade deadline has already occurred. Now that Elias Lindholm is off the board, many are wondering, what will happen with Jake Guentzel.
As we are well aware, the goal scoring winger is in the final year of his contract. He has been one of the Penguins most consistent producers on offense. Even with this production and the historic season of Sidney Crosby, the Penguins are still not a guarantee for the playoffs.The Penguins could be looking at a rebuild and with the uncertainty of the playoffs over Kyle Dubas' head, could it be possible that they are going to trade Guentzel?
Penguins Insider Believes it is Very Possible That Guentzel Will Be Traded
The Athletics writer Josh Yohe says that yes, Dubas will trade Guentzel. Even if that means upsetting their Captain Crosby and Mike Sullivan.
In Yohe's article on The Athletic he says;
«From what I've been told, Dubas isn't afraid to trade Guentzel, even if Crosby and Sullivan would prefer to keep him employed in Pittsburgh, if Dubas believes a new contract simply isn't in the cards, I believe he'll trade Guentzel before letting him walk for nothing.»
Here's the latest on what I'm hearing about Jake Guentzel, Mike Sullivan, Todd Reirden, Erik Karlsson, the Penguins' woeful power play and more. Click here to read about it and to sign up to The Athletic: https://t.co/gLEbqXa2hZ Josh Yohe (@JoshYohe_PGH) February 1, 2024
The smartest thing to do would be to move Guentzel for assets rather than to let him go without recouping anything. He can bring in a prospect, a pick and a NHL ready player.
Keeping Guentzel would also be ideal, if it is possible. He is a solid forward who could be on his way to his third 40-goal season. He has the chemistry with Crosby on the top line. He helps the team win with his production.
Dubas has a difficult decision ahead, either way it seems the right thing to do is not let Guentzel go for nothing.
