This afternoon the Pittsburgh Penguins have made a surprising roster move. Several reports are indicating they have claimed a forward from one of their biggest rivals.

A report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that the Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed Matthew Phillips on waivers from the Washington Capitals.

Phillips has played 30 NHL games in his career split between the Capitals as well as the Calgary Flames. Before sticking with the Capitals this season Phillips was a top AHL player for most of 2022-23.

At just 25 years old the Penguins now have another young piece to add to the depth of their lineup. It will be interesting to see how soon Phillips can get into the lineup.
