It's clear that last night's loss to the Boston Bruins stung like a bee. What seemed like a miracle story as they were down 4-1 and crawled back to 4-3, the hopes quickly died down once the Bruins scored that fifth goal. Last night's loss marked the end of their ten game point streak, an impressive run. Their playoff hopes aren't dead, but they have definitely shot themselves in their foot with last night's defeat.
The only way the Pittsburgh Penguins see the Stanley Cup Playoffs is not by their own destiny, instead, by the help of other teams. The Penguins have a crucial game tomorrow night against the already clinched Nashville Predators, a game where anything less than two points sees themselves out of the playoff picture. The Detroit Red Wings, will end their season with a back to back versus the 28th place Montreal Canadiens, a scenerio where the Penguins will be counting on the Montreal Canadiens to gather at the very least two points. It is not impossible, the Habs have a history of ending their season on a good note, and with the rise of Lane Hutson's debut week, perhaps some momentum will shift to Montreal.
Washington plays Boston at home on Tuesday, then they play another team in the chase, the Philadelphia Flyers. In an ideal world, the Capitals go 0-2, something that seems somewhat possible.
It is safe to say that Penguins fans are bracing themselves for a miracle, but important to acknowledge the incredible adversity and shake up this core has done since the NHL trade deadline where they hit rock bottom.
