Rangers tie a Penguins record that dates back to 2008

The New York Rangers have tied a record that has been standing since the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs set by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins set a record when they went undefeated through their first seven games. This has been long-standing until May 9, 2024, when the New York Rangers went undefeated in their first seven games.



Unfortunately for the Penguins that year, they would make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals only to be the runner-ups and not hoist Lord Stanley.




They would make it back the following year, but the first seven games weren't as easy in the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Penguins.

While the Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009 rather than being runner-up, and funny enough, they would face the same opponent that year, the Detroit Red Wings in both Stanley Cup Finals.



The New York Rangers hope to set a new standard for dominant playoff teams as they look for their second consecutive sweep and eighth win in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.



This doesn't happen every year, taking in a truly special occasion with the Rangers on the cusp of an 8-0 undefeated record truly shows how hard you have to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
