Sidney Crosby has been nominated for an award

The Pittsburgh Penguins captain and backbone Sidney Crosby has been nominated for the Masterton Trophy

It was announced this morning that Sidney Crosby was being nominated for the Masterton Trophy for the second time in his career.



The first time he was nominated was in 2012-13 when he returned from concussion and neck injuries.


Over the years, three Penguins have won this award. Lowell MacDonald (1973), Mario Lemieux (1993) and Kris Letang just last year.

What Crosby has accomplished this year at 36-years-old has put him in the running for this and maybe other awards like MVP. With 84 points (39G, 45A) and playing in every game this year, he is still one of the league elite faceoff leaders and averages over 20 minutes of ice time per game.

There are not many players as dedicated to the game as Crosby. The Masterton Trophy is awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

It was just this year that Crosby took to the ice himself on a bye week during the All-Star break to get in some workout time in Montana on an outdoor rink instead of enjoying down time.

It is not certain that he is a shoe in to win, as the award has been going to players who have returned from difficult injuries as of late. But it is one he should win in his career just for his dedication.

This is not the only award Crosby could be nominated for. It is well documented recently the play that Sid has as he carries the team on his back most nights and is willing them to the playoffs. But with the season players like Nathan MacKinnon, Nikita Kucherov and Connor McDavid are having, it would be a tough road to MVP. He would be more likely to get in the voting for Hart as a Top 5 candidate.



We will see if Crosby wins the Masterton or gets nominated for any other awards for the season he is having.
