Erik Karlsson stepping up down the stretch for the Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been surging their way back into the Stanley Cup playoff picture, but their resurgence isn't down to just one player or moment. However, one standout contributor to their recent success has been defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Fans were ecstatic when Karlsson joined the Penguins last Summer, given his impressive track record, including a 100-point season and multiple Norris Trophies. Yet his transition to the team didn't go as smoothly as expected � until now.

In the midst of the Penguins' nine-game point streak, Karlsson has been a key player, recording five points and leading the team in scoring chances with an impressive 115.

What's been most noticeable is Karlsson's sense of urgency on the ice, something that wasn't as evident earlier in the season. He's been battling hard in both zones, fighting to gain and maintain possession of the puck. He's also been firing shots on goal, leading all Penguins defensemen with 23 shots during this hot streak. Yet for me, the great stretch of play started on March 16th, during a 7-4 loss to the New York Rangers. As ESPN's Ray Ferraro said during the broadcast Karlsson was finally noticeable on both ends of the ice throughout that contest.


With the Penguins needing their stars to step up to secure a playoff spot, Karlsson has answered the call brilliantly, playing a crucial role in their recent heater.
