Not long ago, the Pittsburgh Penguins were scraping the bottom of the Eastern Conference barrel. Now, they're just a point away from playoff territory, with four big games left. So, what changed?
Well, according to Penguins GM Kyle Dubas, it was that epic 5-2 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.Just the way the group handled that night.
Dubas explained on the GM Show with Josh Getzoff. We were coming off of a really disappointing loss ourselves... It would have been easy to just go away and accept that fortune wasn't going to be on our side that night.
Yet instead, they came out swinging, with Bryan Rust scoring just 18 seconds in. From there, they kept the pressure on, extending their point streak to five games and showing they meant business in the playoff race.
They also did it while battling illness! Tristan Jarry, their starting goalie, had to sit out, along with a few other players who were down with a stomach bug. Yet they still pulled off the win for the first time in three tries against the NHL-leading Rangers, who despite not having their best that night, still gave Pittsburgh a scare.
Next up? A showdown with the New Jersey Devils, a team they've historically struggled against. Yet, riding high on their MSG victory, they stormed to another win with five goals in the third period. Talk about keeping the momentum rolling!
