Craig Button, TSN Director of Scouting was on SC with Jay Onrait and the topic of Sidney Crosby came up. Button had some interesting thoughts on if Crosby should leave and what the issue is with the team.
Button Hints that Crosby Could Finish His Career on Another Team
Onrait asked Button how Kyle Dubas avoids wasting the end of Crosby's career, and he hinted on Crosby's career not ending in Pittsburgh.
"Keep in mind that Sidney Crosby has won three Stanley Cups, he has been a great player... Patrick Kane said that he didn't want to leave Chicago either, Marty Brodeur didn't want to leave the New Jersey Devils.... I'm not suggesting that Sidney Crosby should leave Pittsburgh or that he wants to leave Pittsburgh, a lot can change in just over a year from now"
Button went on to say what the real issue with the Penguins is;

In the end, Craig Button suggests that it really is not about what the core guys can do, it is about what everyone else is not doing.
"The age has nothing to do with the performance of (The Penguins Core), the problem those guys have is they don't get any help."
From @CraigJButton on @JayOnSC - How does Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas avoid wasting the end of Sidney Crosby's career? If Pittsburgh is trying to stay competitive for Crosby's final years in the NHL, can they really afford to move Jake Guentzel? https://t.co/28vpKdKGuZ pic.twitter.com/N9GbkOfm1F TSN Hockey (@TSNHockey) February 22, 2024
From this point of view, it is clear that a core issue the Penguins have is depth. Outside of a few players they need more help with the team to progress into a playoff spot.
