Former Penguin Matthew Phillips' Career Takes Another Turn

Former Pittsburgh Penguin Matthew Phillips is back in the league! The Washington Capitals have called up the forward from the Hershey Bears of the AHL, and it's official, announced by none other than the president and general manager, Brian MacLellan.

Matthew Phillips is expected to slot into the Capitals lineup for their March 22 clash against the Carolina Hurricanes.
At 25, Phillips has been making waves this season, racking up five points (1 goal, 4 assists) in 30 games split between the Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He started the season with the Caps, played 27 games, then got picked up by the Penguins for three games, only to find his way back to the Capitals' roster.

However, he made his mark by scoring his first NHL goal and notching his first assist in a Washington Capitals shootout win over the Flames. And now, with four games under his belt with the reigning Calder Cup champions Hershey Bears this season, he's already bagged three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
Originally hailing from Calgary, Phillips was drafted by the Flames back in 2016 before joining the Capitals last summer.
Throughout his NHL career, which spans 33 games across three teams, he's notched a total of five points.
Phillips was soaring with the Calgary Wranglers in the 2022-23 season, putting up an impressive 76 points (36 goals, 40 assists) in 66 games. He made it to the AHL's First All-Star Team and played in the All-Star Game in 2020. Over his 269 AHL games, he's totaled 240 points.
Before his AHL stardom, Phillips tore it up in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Victoria Royals, tallying 281 points (136 goals, 145 assists) in 215 games over four seasons.
With his talent and determination, Phillips is definitely one to watch as he continues to make his mark in the world of hockey.
