The Pittsburgh Penguins needed another big win over the Lightning on Saturday, and they got just that courtesy of a game winning goal from Michael Bunting.
With their win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Pittsburgh Penguins are now tied for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, a moment that no one saw coming after they traded Jake Guentzel at the trade deadline. In this one, it was Michael Bunting, acquired in that deal that picked up the game winner on Saturday, and he spoke to the media about it following the game.
Michael Bunting: "We're in a fight here and it's fun hockey to be a part of, it's exciting. The adrenaline was going and yeah, all my emotions showed in that celebration. I'm sure the whole rink heard me screaming."
Given the passion and the heart he's shown in his NHL career, it's no surprise that Bunting is competing at the highest level, and he also addressed the rising confidence for his new team.
Bunting: "I think each game I'm gaining more confidence, I'm getting more comfortable, and I'm excited to be a Penguin. It's been a lot of fun. The guys have been great and welcoming me in. It's starting to feel like, yeah, it's my team and I'm part of the squad,' so it's nice.»
It wasn't pretty, as the Penguins almost squandered an early lead, but they ultimately got it done, and if they can keep grinding out wins like this, they'll be a handful in the playoffs.
Michael Bunting grinned when I asked about that third period: "Yeah, we made it exciting, eh? Obviously, we want to hold those leads... but that's a good hockey team. I think we regrouped well. We had confidence going in, and we just wanted to get back to our game."
