Penguins goaltender named as top free agent available

The Pittsburgh Penguins have one of the top free agent players this off-season and he is not even their starting goaltender.

Alex Nedeljkovic fought for the top role in Pittsburgh against starter Tristian Jarry and showed that he can handle that pressure and workload. Although the Pens came up short on the playoffs, Ned showed that he can handle it, just as his one-year deal with Pittsburgh is coming to an end.



Nedeljkovic had 13 straight starts at the end of the season, and his record was 8-1-3 during that time. According to Daily Faceoff he is the 31st best overall free agent, and the best available goalie.




Nedeljkovic was an All-Rookie out of Carolina in 2020-21, and then struggled to find his way in Detroit for two years. He played in 74 games for Detroit and was 25-31-11 during that time bouncing between the NHL and AHL.



In his one year in Pittsburgh his goals against average dropped from 3.35 to 2.97, improving his game play.

The Penguins and Nedeljkovic are in a tough spot. With Jarry signed and Joel Blomqvist knocking on the door from Wilkes-Barre, Nedeljkovic can be the odd man out in Pittsburgh. With free agency coming July 1st, he can possibly get a starting job with another team, being the hottest goalie available.
