The Penguins increase their odds of making the playoffs

With a big win against the top team in the Metropolitan division the New York Rangers, the Penguins have helped to increase their playoff odds.

The Penguins came out strong against the Rangers Monday night, and the win helped them in their confidence as well as their playoff odds. The 5-2 victory over the division leaders helped them take a step forward to the possible post-season.



According to moneypuck.com the Penguins have a 8.2% chance of making the playoffs. There is still a lot that needs to happen, but their chances have increased a lot since last weeks 1.3% chance.


The playoff hunt continues right away as the Penguins face the New Jersey Devils, who now have a 6.5% chance at the playoffs themselves. The Pens jumped the Devils after last night's win, so a win against New Jersey tonight will give them a 3-point cushion over the Devils.

The wildcard spots in the Eastern conference have been interesting for months now, with the Tampa Bay Lightning all but securing the first wild card spot with 89 points and a 99.99% chance of making the playoffs.

Detroit (40.5%) and Washington (67.4%) are tied with 82 points, and the Capitals have the edge of the Red Wings to make the playoffs based on remaining schedules. The Capitals also have three games in hand over the Flyers for the 3rd divisional spot. The Flyers (63.1%) currently hold it with 83 points.

The only other team in the way are the New York Islanders (13.8%) with 79 points as they sit just 2 points over the Penguins. The Penguins have eight games remaining, with five of them against teams mentioned above. Those wins will be critical for the Penguins to make any movement towards securing the playoffs.
