The Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender position has sparked much debate over the 2023-24 season. Without any stability due to Tristan Jarry falling apart, this leaves the organization's number one goaltender position vacant.
While many options are available on the open market come July 1st, the salary cap is the issue when it comes to free agency. Searching in-house for a stable netminder presents nothing reliable.
Tristan Jarry fell apart in the Penguins' playoff push, Alex Nedeljkovic is due a new contract and is more likely a backup option, and finally, Joel Blomqvist likely needs a season bouncing from the ECHL to the AHL.

If a team wants to open their Stanley Cup window, they might need to search for that number one goaltender from outside their organization. Both the previous two Stanley Cup Champions, the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023 and the Colorado Avalanche (2022) sourced their goaltenders either via free agency or by trade.
If Jarry can't find his game, the Penguins will be stuck with a poor contract that will be hard to offload and they will have to be forced to bridge a couple of experienced goaltenders until they can find long-term solutions.
If there is anything the Penguins should do is try to figure it out with Tristan Jarry while his contract is still on the books for Pittsburgh. Four more years with an aging goaltender making just under $5.4 million will be a hard pill to swallow, but that salary cap is going up fast and at the end of this contract, it won't look so bad.
