Several Former Toronto Maple Leafs players have since developed into star players on other teams after Kyle Dubas let them walk. This does not bode well for the Penguins who added Dubas in the offseason.
In hindsight, the biggest mistake Dubas made during his tenure with the Maple Leafs might have been when he let Zach Hyman walk in free agency. Hyman has since become a lethal goal scorer playing with Connor McDavid. This season he achieved a remarkable career-best as he surpassed he 50 goal mark, an incredibly rare feat in the NHL.🚨 50 GOALS 🚨

And yet Hyman is not alone. He is just one of many former Leafs that have gone on to have successful careers outside the Leafs organization. Among them is Nazem Kadri, who helped the Colorado Avalanche win their 3rd Stanley Cup in 2022. Kadri became the first Muslim player in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup.

Another former Leaf in Mason Marchment has also achieved new career highs since he left the organization. This year he recorded his first ever 20-goal season. Marchment has 52 career goals and 140 points in 232 career games. He had just one assist in four games with the Leafs before the team decided to let him go.
Mason Marchment does it all himself for a beautiful goal, pushing the Dallas lead to 2!

There are several other players that were once with the Leafs that have since developed into bigger roles as well. They include Jared McCann and Alex Barabanov among others. Hopefully this trend does not follow Dubas to Pittsburgh.
