Throughout the year, we have been hearing trade rumors about Erik Karlsson. So much so that the defenseman even called out the media for stirring that pot. When he was asked about trade rumors to Ottawa, Karlsson remarked:
"That's Canada for you."
Erik Karlsson Could Still Be An Option For The Penguins To Deal
For the moment, the Penguins are not interested in dealing the defenseman. But that could all change.
According to Josh Yohe of the Athletic, the Penguins may just be open to conversations about Karlsson.
«I do believe the Penguins would consider moving on from Karlsson,» Yohe writes. «It's not that they don't recognize his genius on the ice and they assuredly do not regret last summer's trade with San Jose. Far from it It just hasn't worked.»
There are rumors about the Sens being interested in reuniting with Erik Karlsson. «That's Canada for you,» he said.
Funny line. This didn't stop me from discussing such a move with @ian_mendes who is one of my favorite Canadians. Check it out: https://t.co/RhvwRHRrMu Josh Yohe (@JoshYohe_PGH) March 18, 2024
Over the course of this season, Karlsson has 8 goals and 38 assists, which is a very large drop-off from his 100-point season last year. Karlsson was brought to Pittsburgh to showcase his lethal shot, which he has not used as much as one would think. In fact, he only has a couple of goals in his last 47 games.
Karlsson's $10 Million Cap Hit Puts Some Limitations On The Penguins
The Penguins look to get younger and have plenty of over 30 players on the team. Karlsson at 33, also has one of the bigger cap hits even with San Jose retaining some of his salary, he costs the Pens $10 million on the cap hit.
Yohe went on to further write:
«To remove themselves from his considerable salary is something, I suspect, that Kyle Dubas would be open to discussing.»
As of right now, Kyle Dubas is not interested in moving Karlsson. But, when you are trying to get some youth infused into your team, nothing is out of the question.
